3 days cycling adventure from Chiang-Mai to Chiang-Rai

Fitness Level: Suitable for participants in good fitness condition! Off-road riding experience is recommended. Some hills but no long climbs as we cycle in the valley.

From Chiang Mai, join the Northern Trails team and experience great riding, varied landscapes, scenic river surroundings and good trails. Discover small hill tribes villages of Northern Thailand and pristine rural life.

This tour is a shorter version of our most scenic route, 4 days Northern Thailand Mountain Biking.

Highlights

The Chiangdao valley is surrounded by mountains including one of the country’s highest peak, Doi Luang. Ride great trails in the valley through scenic landscape with limestone rocks and dense bamboo forest. Ride the most scenic Northern Trails route with varied sights, village life and hill tribes. Challenging trails for experienced mountain-bikers and nature lovers.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – MONDAY / ELEPHANT CAMP AND RIDE THE CHIANGDAO VALLEY. Cycle 30 to 40 km (25 miles)
08.30 Pick-up participants from Chiang Mai hotels and drive north by covered pickup to Chiangdao region. Stop at elephant camp in jungle. Watch elephants bathing and demonstrating their skills. Explore Chiangdao caves, followed by lunch at local restaurant. Then we start our bike ride through rural back roads first, continuing on off-road trails, across a pristine landscape leading to small hill-tribe villages. Visit Lahu, Lisu and Akha villages, and discover the Palaung people from Myanmar with only a few settlements in northern Thailand. We cycle another 2 kilometers to reach the Padeng Lodge where we spend the night. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge in basic fan rooms.

DAY 2 – TUESDAY / CHIANGDAO, AND RIDE UP NORTH TO THATON. Cycle 60 km (38 miles)
Intense and fantastic riding through nature! The ride is long today, but not too difficult and the escort vehicle is always near by.

After breakfast, ride exciting trails (15km) then onto paved road. Lunch stop and visit Buddhist forest temple and caves. Afternoon cycling is mostly off-road, until car transfer to Ban Thaton for overnight. Overnight at local hotel located on the bank of the Maekok river. Dinner at hotel.

DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY / MAEKOK RIVER VALLEY RIDE TO CHIANGRAI. Cycle 45 to 60 km (38 miles+)
Early morning, after breakfast, we cycle through the Maekok river valley, past rice fields and plantations. Then we follow exciting trails along the river. End of the trails so we take a local long-tail boat downriver. Disembark and continue cycling to a Karen village on the riverbanks. Continue by bike or transfer by car to Chiang Rai.
Drop off at Chiang Rai Airport or hotel.

General Information

Departure possible all year long. Participants must bring personal cycling gear including shorts, gloves, sunglasses.
Best (coolest) season is from September to end of February.
Itinerary subject to change according to season.
End of the tour in Chiang-Rai. Flights to Bangkok are available everyday on Thai Airways or Air Asia in the evening, between 19.00 to 20.00.

Accommodation and meals

First night at the Padeng Lodge in Chiandao. Fan cooled rooms in wooden Thai house. Toilet facilities including western style toilets and hot shower outside the rooms. Second night we stay in a tourist class hotel in Ban Thaton, with private bathroom.

Meals are taken at local restaurants or hotels. Participants will certainly have plenty of opportunities to discover and enjoy Thai delicacies throughout the trip. Drinking water, fruits and snacks are always available in our escort vehicle. Other drinks are not included in price, but widely available at local restaurants and shops along the way.
